Pastor Wayne Woods
Pastor Wayne Woods spent most of his growing-up years in the small east central Alabama town of Wadley, after moving there from New Orleans when he was entering the fourth grade. He and his mother and little brother had moved to his mother’s hometown to live with his grandmother. He enjoyed high school sports, especially football, being selected as an all-state player his senior year. He began dating his wife, June, in the tenth grade in high school. Pastor Wayne was saved at a youth revival at the Wadley Baptist Church at the age of 15 and not long after that, felt a strong call to ministry, even though he did not obey that call until years later.
After graduating in 1970, he attended Vanderbilt University for a year on a Naval R.O.T.C. scholarship, then applied to the U. S. Naval Academy. He entered the Naval Academy in the summer of 1971 and graduated in 1975. He and June were married at Wadley Baptist Church three days after graduation on June 7, 1975. After flight training, he was a U.S. Navy pilot flying P3 Orion sub-hunters in Jacksonville, Florida, until early 1982. By then the Lord had blessed them with two children, Stephanie, born in 1978, and Brian, born in 1981. He resigned from the Navy in 1982 only because he no longer desired the long family separations.
Although he did not yet realize it, the Lord’s call was still there, even though he was not walking close enough to Him to clearly hear it. That, however, changed, when the family moved to Greenville, S.C., in 1983. Pastor Wayne was working as an engineer for Michelin Tire Corporation. More importantly, the Lord had moved the family there to put us in a church where the call became so clear, he could no longer ignore it. Wayne and June said “yes” to His call during an invitation on Easter Sunday of 1984. They sold their house and moved to Memphis, Tennessee, to attend Mid-America Baptist Theological Seminary, which he graduated from in the summer of 1987.
Our Beliefs
Key Core Beliefs:
- The One True God: There is one True and Living God, Creator and Redeemer of mankind, made known to us as God the Father, God the Son, and God the Holy Spirit (Deut. 6:4; Matthew 28:19)
- Jesus Christ is the Only Way to Salvation: Jesus the Son, in His true humanity, lived the perfectly obedient life no one else ever could so that His death on the Cross would fully satisfy the righteous demands of God’s law and His glorious resurrection would prove His victory of death, hell, and the grave for all who would trust Him. (John 14:6; 2 Corinthians 5:21)
- The Supreme Authority of the Bible: The Bible is God’s truth supernaturally revealed to and preserved for us. It provides clear direction for all of life and is sufficient as our only rule for faith and practice (2 Timothy 3:16)
- The Love of God For Us and In Us: God is love and has clearly demonstrated that love in the death of Christ for our sins. The experience of His love demands we love others as the basis for all we do. (1 John 4:7-11)
- The Great Commission as Our Chief Calling: The last and lasting command of the Lord Jesus was to GO, both across the street and around the world, with the life-transforming message of His saving grace. Founded by Christ and empowered by God the Holy Spirit, His Church is uniquely equipped to fulfill this purpose.(Matthew 28:19,20; Acts 1:8)

Ten Mile Baptist Church
Ten Mile Baptist Church was established around 1888 in a community known as Carter Town. In earlier days, Ten Mile Baptist Church was called Ten Mile Landmark Missionary Baptist Church. From church minutes available there was no record of how or why the church received its name or why it was changed.
The records of the church’s early years are believed to have been destroyed by fire. However, with the help of some of the older church members we have been able to preserve a portion of the history of the church. According to this history, Loucretia Henderson Carter and David Carter donated land and established the first church in 1888. David was the son of Isaac Carter who settled in the Ten Mile Creek area in the early 1820s. As the story was told, Loucretia drove a horse and buggy and went about and begged and borrowed endlessly to raise money to get the church started.
Older church members recall they had worshiped by lantern and lamplight and traveled to church by horse and buggy. The preacher’s pay during the early days was determined by the amount of money taken in the offering. Sometimes a “grocery pounding” would be given to the pastor and members would put groceries in his wagon while he was preaching. Another way the church members showed their appreciation and love of their pastor was to sell something they had and give him the money.
(continued)
In 1913, it was decided to build a new church near the cemetery. Wiley Carter donated land for the second church building. In 1960, the old frame church that still stands nearby was moved from its original site, and a new block building was built. Hugh Jordan donated the land. Years later, a fellowship hall was built. However, the shelter that had been used for dinners, reunions, and other get-togethers was not torn down and still stands at the church today.
Nestled amid scrub oak and pine, it is a peaceful haven of rest for those who seek spiritual uplift and comfort. Ten Mile is a symbol of old-time religion.” Steeped in the tradition of a bygone generation, it remains keenly aware of the spiritual needs of the community and gives promise of a continuing and lengthy span of life.
Although a portion of the history is not available, some of the most important documents of the church have been preserved. The deed to the land is unique in its description of the landlines. Such things as light-wood posts, saplings, and three live oak trees are used as descriptive items to mark the lines. The old minutes have the church covenant and the articles of faith on their pages.
